About a third of Americans (37.9%) are obese and more than two-thirds (70.7%) are overweight. Physical activity is on the rise, especially with so many new trends from yoga, new workout routines and endless streams of physical activities, but the numbers have only gotten worse. As a side note, we aren't talking about athletes who have a high BMI due to more lean mass. What's going on?
MOST WORKOUTS ARE TORTUROUS
Humans have become honeycomb batteries that perpetually store energy for times that never come. Evolving in an era where energy was scarce, humans have now created food combinations that override our natural satiety mechanisms, pursuing novelty chasing in foods and cause us to rapidly gain weight while staying glued to furniture. Now tell that human to go through a regular physical workout routine and they will find it to be a painful and uncomfortable experience that is unsustainable for the long haul. Why suffer when the reward is way too long term? Hopelessness is easy exit and contagious, especially in low income households.
OUR LIFESTYLE SUCKS
Comfort is a status symbol which is now our own undoing when it comes to health. For millions of years we have fought for survival with our bodies adapting accordingly to such hostile environments. Now, in this golden age, we have the destructive utopia of unlimited feasting through cheap and accessible foods with captivating media in the form of video games, smart phones, tablets and televisions. In other words, we're simulating the discomfort and struggle of such hostile environments on our screens without following them up with the physical requirements to face such challenges. We live through heroes and idols while never becoming one ourselves.
WE SEEK QUICK RESULTS
Quick solutions and the pill culture is the social conditioning we are exposed since childbirth. Practically all narratives, including our sensationalist media news, is merely a repetitive narrative of the "hero with a thousand faces" as it invokes quick emotional response and traffic that generates revenue. This has given rise to people actively hunting for short and quick solutions to problems that have accumulated over time and are realistically multi-factorial. Yes, obesity is more than just insulin or simple energy overload. Humans and human societies interact in various ways and that is something that cannot be simulated in any metabolic ward study.
EVERY DIET FAILS
Many people get on a diet for a while to acheive a goal and then they fall off the bandwagon since the diet becomes a prison rather than something liberating and enjoyable. Willpower erosion, hopelessness and various intrinsic and extrinsic human factors can erode a diet. For instance, many diet gurus are absolutely livid about sweeteners and sweet foods for god knows what dogmatic reason. Suppressing a completely normal human sensation is a perfect recipe for failure. Instead of focusing on suppression, it's much better to understand how food works, indulge in what one enjoys and incorporate that into the diet for the long haul. Play smart, not hard.
WE'VE PUT PRICE TAGS ON HEALTH
It's working for now but we are now skeptical of the future successes of the low carb and Keto diets? Well, it's simple. For one, there's so many different versions now! More importantly, as soon as monetary gains come into play, the focus isn't on health but profiting off of something new and sensationalist. This involves promoting products, activities and services that are more of a placebo effect or in some cases, may be detrimental to health. We expect this to be the downfall of Keto as we witnessed the downfall of paleo and god knows how many diets that have come along. As a food company, our social experiment has been to autonomously create products with the best ingredients we can find and utilizing the best science that is available. Cut through all the fluff and BS. We give something more than just a product: peace of mind, transparency and a perpetual journey of improving ours and health of our customers.
MOST WORKOUTS DON'T BURN THAT MANY CALORIES
This is going to scrape some eyeballs but most workout routines short of endurance-based sports don't exactly burn that many calories. They still do burn calories but the vicious cycle of overeating and then attempting to burn the excess calories off is self-inflicted torture and this sort of messaging should be stamped out of human existance. Here's an anecdote of a lady who eats nothing but steak, never "works out" and looks spectacular for her age. Now this is a single anecdote but several anecdotes exist on the linked website. An explanation on how this works is here.
CONCLUSION
Focus on things you enjoy while smartly incorporating them into your life. This includes foods, relationships and activities. Life is too short to be encased in dogmatic fervor of food and nutrition. Food is a means of sustenance, liberty and art. Focus on quality and not on quantity and impulse(eg. flavor and taste alone.) Don't put a price tag on your health for it's the most expensive asset you have that you can trade with as it will continue to diminish over time. Functional health is the new status symbol and an icon of freedom as it depends on discipline and smart choices in life, especially in a society enveloped in chronic illnessess and mesmerized by detrimental consumerism. There is so much beauty, cultures and experiences to be had in the world.
