Can drinking more water help with weight loss? This is a common question that many people have asked, but the answer may not be as simple as we thought. According to a 2018 study(1), increasing water intake does not necessarily reduce food intake, which is the more important factor in weight loss.
The study found that drinking more water in the morning can help reduce hunger and food cravings, but it doesn't always lead to a reduction in overall energy intake. In the first experiment, normal weight participants who drank three 500 ml bottles of water throughout the morning consumed less energy at lunch, but there was no effect on overweight or obese participants. In the second experiment, there was no effect of water intake on energy intake at lunch for any participants.
Despite this, increasing water intake can still be beneficial in reducing hunger and cravings, particularly for females. So, while water intake alone may not lead to significant weight loss, it can be a helpful tool in managing hunger and staying hydrated throughout the day.
